Mikrogeophagus altispinosus
Also known as: Bolivian Ram, Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid, Altispinosus Ram
Origin: South America
The Bolivian Ram is found in the upper Madeira River basin of Bolivia and Brazil. It is significantly hardier than its cousin the German Blue Ram and tolerates a broader range of water temperatures and parameters, making it an excellent choice for intermediate hobbyists. Males display attractive orange-yellow body coloration with a spotted pattern and develop lyre-tail extensions when mature.
Water: 22-26°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5-15); quite adaptable. Tank: 80L minimum, sand substrate, caves, moderate planting, open swimming areas. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen foods and quality dry foods; a varied diet is key. Behaviour: forms monogamous pairs; mild territorial behaviour during breeding. Compatibility: excellent community cichlid; works with most peaceful fish including larger tetras.
