Mikrogeophagus altispinosus
Also known as: Bolivian Ram, Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid, Ruby Crown Cichlid
Origin: South America (Bolivia, western Brazil — upper Madeira River basin)

Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, the Bolivian Ram, is a dwarf cichlid native to the upper Madeira River basin in Bolivia and western Brazil. Often overshadowed by its more popular relative the German Blue Ram (M. ramirezi), the Bolivian Ram is arguably the better choice for aquarists seeking a beautiful, hardy dwarf cichlid that tolerates a wider range of water conditions.
The colouration is distinctive and attractive: a yellow to golden-orange base body with blue iridescent spots, a black lateral spot with an orange-red halo, vivid red at the tips of the dorsal and caudal fins, and blue-tipped unpaired fins. The overall appearance is colourful but more subtly beautiful than the German Blue Ram, appealing to aquarists who appreciate elegant understatement.
Bolivian Rams grow to approximately 8 cm and display moderate cichlid personality: territorial toward each other during spawning but generally peaceful with other species. They are open substrate spawners — pairs select a flat stone or shallow depression in the substrate to deposit eggs, which both parents guard.
Unlike the German Blue Ram which requires very warm, very soft, very acidic water and is sensitive to any deviation, the Bolivian Ram is considerably more robust and tolerates moderate water hardness and neutral pH. This makes it suitable for many standard community aquarium water conditions.
Tank Setup: A 60-litre minimum for a pair. Sandy or fine gravel substrate with flat spawning stones, caves, and robust plants. Gentle to moderate filtration. Dense plants and wood create territories. Leaf litter enhances the natural appearance and provides microhabitat.
Water Parameters: Temperature 22–28°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 4–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Far more tolerant than German Blue Ram. Suitable for moderate Belgian tap water without extensive treatment.
Feeding: Omnivore. Feed quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Mysis shrimp. Feed twice daily. Occasional live food for conditioning before breeding.
Tank Mates: Peaceful community cichlid. Compatible with small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, and other peaceful bottom-neutral species that don't compete for substrate territory. Avoid overly aggressive fish and other substrate-guarding cichlids in small tanks.
Behaviour: Less aggressive than German Blue Ram. Pairs spawn on flat surfaces and guard eggs and fry well. The male is generally less aggressive toward the female than in M. ramirezi. Multiple males may coexist in large tanks with clear territory boundaries.
Health: Hardy and more disease-resistant than M. ramirezi. Sensitive to very cold water (below 20°C) and high nitrates (above 25 ppm). Regular water changes maintain health. Rarely ill in well-maintained conditions.
