Carinotetraodon borneensis
Also known as: Borneo Red-eye Puffer, Borneo Dwarf Puffer
Origin: Borneo, Indonesia
Carinotetraodon borneensis is native to the blackwater streams and peat swamp rivers of Borneo, where it inhabits slow, tannin-stained waters among dense aquatic vegetation. Its striking red eyes contrast beautifully with the mottled chocolate-brown body. Softer, more acidic water conditions replicate its natural habitat and support best colouration.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft and slightly acidic; tannins from botanicals are beneficial. Tank: Minimum 40 L; heavily planted blackwater setup with driftwood, leaf litter, and floating plants. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, daphnia, tubifex, and small ramshorn snails. Behaviour: Bold and curious but highly territorial with conspecifics; best kept alone or in large species tanks. Compatibility: Species-only; do not mix with other puffers or fin-nipping victims.
