Campylomormyrus rhynchophorus
Also known as: Bottle-nose Mormyrid, Rhynchophorus Mormyrid
Origin: Africa
Campylomormyrus rhynchophorus is found in the Congo River and its affluents and is one of the most morphologically extreme members of the Mormyridae. Its long, strongly curved rostral organ is used to extract invertebrates from narrow rock crevices in fast-flowing riffle zones. It is rare in the hobby and commands significant interest from mormyrid specialists.
Water: 23-27°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft, slightly acidic; tannin-stained water well accepted. Tank: Minimum 150L, rocky biotope with crevices, subdued lighting, hiding zones. Feeding: Carnivore; live Tubifex, small earthworms, frozen bloodworm; extractive feeding behaviour. Behaviour: Shy and mostly peaceful; may conflict with other electric fish using similar frequencies. Compatibility: Peaceful Congo basin species; avoid other mormyrids unless tank is very large.
