Brachygobius xanthozona
Also known as: Brachygobius Xanthozona Goby, Xanthozona Bumblebee Goby, Broad-band Bumblebee Goby
Origin: Borneo, Indonesian archipelago
Brachygobius xanthozona is closely related to other Bumblebee Goby species but is distinguished by its proportionally wider yellow transverse bands that give a bolder and higher-contrast banding pattern. Originally described from Borneo, it is found in brackish estuaries, tidal creeks, and coastal river mouths across parts of Borneo and the surrounding Indonesian archipelago. Like its congeners, it is a tiny goby rarely exceeding 4.5 cm that inhabits shallow, vegetated brackish-water environments. In the aquarium it requires the same specialised conditions as other Brachygobius: slightly brackish water with added marine salt, hard and alkaline water chemistry, small caves for territorial shelter, and a diet primarily of live or frozen micro-prey. It is more difficult to feed than many aquarium fish and is best kept in a species-specific setup or alongside other small brackish nano species. A rewarding fish for aquarists prepared to meet its dietary requirements.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–20, KH 5–15; brackish at SG 1.002–1.008; hard and alkaline conditions. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand or gravel with small caves, Java fern, and Vallisneria; minimal flow. Feeding: Micro-carnivore; live bloodworm, daphnia, baby brine shrimp are essential; dry food acceptance is rare. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; moderately challenging; fry need micro-foods from day one. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; avoid fast-feeding or larger tankmates that will outcompete for food.
