Serrasalmus brandtii
Also known as: Brandtii Piranha, São Francisco Piranha
Origin: São Francisco and Jequitinhonha basins, Brazil
Serrasalmus brandtii is restricted to the São Francisco and Jequitinhonha river systems of eastern Brazil, making it one of the more geographically isolated piranha species. It presents silver-grey flanks with fine dark stippling and a moderately deep body profile compared to other Serrasalmus.
Because it originates from rivers with higher pH than typical Amazonian species, it tolerates a wider range of water conditions, making it slightly more forgiving for experienced keepers. Nonetheless, like all piranhas, it is aggressive and predatory, requiring solo housing.
Check local laws before purchase; piranha keeping is regulated in most regions.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH); more tolerant of neutral to slightly alkaline conditions than most Serrasalmus. Tank: Minimum 400L; robust filtration; provide driftwood and rock hiding spots; secure lid essential. Feeding: Whole fish, prawns, shrimp; feed every 2-3 days; remove uneaten food to preserve water quality. Breeding: No reliable captive breeding records; egg-guarding behaviour suspected. Compatibility: Solo housing required; piranha keeping is restricted or illegal in many countries — verify before purchase.
