Crenicichla brasiliensis
Also known as: Brasiliensis Pike Cichlid, Atlantic Pike Cichlid, Brazilian Coastal Pike Cichlid
Origin: Atlantic coastal rivers, eastern Brazil
Crenicichla brasiliensis is a robust pike cichlid native to the Atlantic coastal rivers of eastern Brazil, particularly the rivers of Bahia and Espírito Santo states. It is one of the more straightforward Crenicichla to maintain, tolerating a wider range of water parameters than many of its Amazonian relatives — an advantage for aquarists without RO water equipment.
This species has a classic pike cichlid body plan: elongated, laterally compressed, with a wide gape and a clearly defined dark lateral stripe running from the eye to the base of the caudal fin. The caudal spot is bold and well-defined. In breeding condition, males develop a more intense colouration across the fins and cheeks.
A tank of at least 200 litres with plenty of hiding places is recommended. C. brasiliensis will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth, so tankmates must be chosen accordingly. A carnivore diet of frozen and prepared meaty foods keeps it in good condition, and the species is not difficult to breed in a well-conditioned bonded pair.
Water: Adaptable to pH 6.0–7.5 and up to 15 dGH; temperature 22–27°C suits this cooler-climate species. Tank: 200 L minimum with caves, smooth rocks, and open sandy areas; robust plants optional. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods, earthworms, and quality pellets; feeds readily once settled. Breeding: Cave spawner; the female guards eggs while the male defends territory perimeter. Compatibility: Keep only with fish too large to be eaten; avoid small peaceful species.
