Cambarellus texanus (orange form)
Also known as: Brazos Dwarf Crayfish, Orange Dwarf Crayfish
Origin: North America (Texas)
Cambarellus texanus, the Brazos Dwarf Crayfish, is one of the smallest and most peaceable freshwater crayfish available. The orange form displays warm amber-orange colouration and rarely exceeds 4 cm, making it suitable for tanks as small as 40 litres. Unlike larger crayfish, it is generally plant-safe and can be kept with small fish without predation concerns, making it one of the few crayfish species truly suitable for community aquariums.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 6–15, KH 3–8; tolerates typical conditioned tap water. Tank: minimum 40 L, small caves, leaf litter, and plants (largely plant-safe). Feeding: sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, frozen daphnia. Behaviour: active and curious; far less aggressive than larger crayfish species. Compatibility: safe with small fish, snails, and larger shrimp; avoid tiny nano fish.
