Apistogramma sp. 'Breitbinden'
Also known as: Breitbinden Apisto, Broad-banded Dwarf Cichlid, Wide-band Apistogramma
Origin: Colombia
Apistogramma sp. 'Breitbinden' (German for 'broad-banded') is a striking undescribed Colombian species whose most immediately recognizable feature is a lateral band markedly wider than in any closely related form — occupying nearly a third of the body depth at its widest point. This bold graphic marking is what first attracted collector attention to this undescribed form.
The species is native to the Colombian Amazon drainage and inhabits soft, mildly acidic forest streams. It is moderately demanding in its water chemistry requirements but is not an extreme blackwater specialist, making it approachable for intermediate hobbyists.
With its distinctive lateral band and attractive supporting coloration of blue scale rows and yellow-orange fin accents, Breitbinden is a standout addition to any Apistogramma collection.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C. Tank: 60 L with caves, leaf litter, and plant coverage. Feeding: Small live/frozen invertebrates and micro-pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards fry; intermediate difficulty. Compatibility: Small peaceful tetras and other soft-water Amazonian species.
