Xiphophorus hellerii var.
Also known as: Brick Red Swordtail, Deep Red Swordtail
Origin: Captive bred
The Brick Red Swordtail is selectively bred for a darker, more earthy red colouration than the typical bright red strains — a deep brick-red hue that stands out for its richness and intensity. The lower sword is well-developed and proportional, completing the classic swordtail silhouette.
This darker colour variant is particularly striking in planted aquariums where the warm, deep red contrasts beautifully with green foliage. Unlike some brighter red strains that can appear washed out under certain lighting, the brick red holds its colour impact across different light temperatures.
A hardy and reliable swordtail strain suitable for beginners and experienced hobbyists, adapting well to a range of community tank setups.
Water: 20–27 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; stable hard water maintains the deep colour. Tank: 100 L minimum; long tank preferred; tight-fitting lid required. Feeding: Colour flake, frozen Artemia, spirulina; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–100 fry per brood; colour is well-established in quality lines. Compatibility: Peaceful community swordtail; ideal for mixed livebearer tanks.
