Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Brilliant Turquoise Discus, Turquoise Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Brilliant Turquoise Discus is a long-established favourite in the discus hobby. Its body is densely covered in closely spaced, vivid turquoise-blue horizontal lines that run from gill to caudal fin, catching and refracting light in a way that makes the fish appear to glow under the right lighting conditions.
Originally developed from wild turquoise discus genetics, this domestic strain has been refined over generations for line density, colour saturation, and uniformity. It performs best in soft, warm water with stable parameters and a high-protein diet supplemented with colour-enhancing foods.
The Brilliant Turquoise is an excellent introduction to the discus hobby — it is relatively forgiving compared to some wild strains while still delivering the spectacular appearance that makes discus the undisputed king of freshwater fish.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; excellent mechanical and biological filtration required. Tank: Minimum 250 L tall, warm indirect lighting enhances turquoise shimmer, driftwood and leaf litter. Feeding: Colour-enhancing discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, brine shrimp, spirulina flakes. Breeding: Productive pair spawner on vertical slate or terracotta cone; both parents guard and feed fry. Compatibility: Excellent community discus; pairs well with cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, and Corydoras.
