Artemia salina
Origin: Worldwide (salt lakes)
Artemia salina, the brine shrimp, is a fascinating saltwater crustacean commonly cultured as a live food source and educational display organism. A live colony allows aquarists to observe their complete lifecycle and harvest nauplii as a highly nutritious food for fish and invertebrates. Brine shrimp thrive in hypersaline water and require minimal equipment.
Culture in hypersaline water (SG 1.018–1.025) with constant aeration. Feed with green water (phytoplankton) or yeast-based foods. Harvest nauplii within 24–48 hours of hatching for maximum nutritional value. Maintain in a bright area (natural or artificial light promotes hatching). Not for introduction to display aquariums — keep in separate culture vessel.
