Ancistrus cirrhosus is the definitive beginner pleco, prized for its manageable size, hardy nature, and tireless algae-eating behaviour. Males develop elaborate facial bristles (cirri) that are unique among pleco species. It breeds readily in caves and is one of the few plecos captive-bred on a large commercial scale.

Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and driftwood grazing. Behaviour: Nocturnal; males territorial over caves but peaceful with dissimilar fish. Compatibility: Ideal community pleco; compatible with tetras, corydoras, livebearers, and most cichlids.
