Ancistrus sp. L183
Also known as: White Seam Bristlenose Pleco, Starlight Bristlenose, L183 Pleco
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Negro blackwater system)

Ancistrus sp. L183, the White Seam or Starlight Bristlenose Pleco, is a highly attractive L-number pleco from the Rio Negro and associated blackwater drainages of the Brazilian Amazon. It is distinguished from standard Bristlenose Plecos by the bold white to cream margins on the dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins, which stand out dramatically against the dark brown to blackish body.
In the L-number system — established to catalogue undescribed Loricariid catfish species entering the hobby — L183 designates this particular form of Ancistrus originating from the Rio Negro region. The Rio Negro is one of the world's largest blackwater rivers, characterised by very soft, highly acidic, tannin-stained water with extremely low mineral content.
Despite its origin in soft acidic water, L183 adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions and can be kept in moderately hard water without health issues. Like all Bristlenose Plecos, males develop fleshy tentacle-like bristles on the snout as they mature — absent in females — providing easy sexing and the characteristic 'bristle nose' appearance.
The White Seam Bristlenose has all the practical qualities of the standard Bristlenose Pleco: excellent algae grazing, manageable adult size (12–13 cm), ease of breeding in caves, compatibility with most community fish, and general hardiness — combined with significantly more visual appeal.
Tank Setup: Same requirements as standard Bristlenose Pleco. Minimum 60-litre tank with driftwood (essential for dietary fibre), caves for hiding and spawning, gentle to moderate filtration, and fine to medium substrate. Dark substrate and soft lighting suit the dark colouration.
Water Parameters: Temperature 20–28°C; pH 5.5–7.5; GH 2–15 °dH; KH 1–8 °dH. Origin in blackwater suggests softer, more acidic water for ideal condition — but adaptable to moderate hardness.
Feeding: Herbivore-detritivore. Provide driftwood for constant rasping, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and occasional sinking protein pellets. Feed in the evening.
Tank Mates: Peaceful with all community fish. Same compatibility as standard Bristlenose Pleco — one of the best general-purpose community catfish.
Behaviour: Nocturnal grazer. Males territorial toward rival males — provide one cave per male. Cave spawning is common when conditions are right — eggs are orange and guarded by the male.
Health: Hardy. Requires driftwood for health — without it, digestive problems develop. Sensitive to copper and poor oxygenation. Provide good surface agitation.
