About

Corydoras aeneus, the Bronze Corydoras, is one of the most widely distributed, commonly available, and extensively studied Corydoras species in the aquarium hobby. Native to the river systems of Trinidad and South America — including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil — it inhabits a wide range of environments from clear forest streams to muddy floodplain pools, reflecting its exceptional adaptability.

The wild-type Bronze Corydoras displays a metallic bronze to greenish-gold body with a pinkish belly, two rows of overlapping bony scutes instead of scales, and the characteristic corydoras face with three pairs of sensitive barbels. The species has given rise to numerous colour variants in the aquarium hobby, including the Albino (white body, pink eyes), Gold, and Melanistic (very dark) morphs.

Corydoras are armoured catfish (family Callichthyidae) belonging to a group that evolved during the Miocene in South America. The bony armour, distinctive body shape, and intestinal air breathing (corydoras periodically absorb oxygen through their intestine, gulping air at the surface) are hallmark characteristics.

The Bronze Corydoras is an ideal community fish — peaceful, non-threatening to any other species, active and entertaining, and practically indestructible when given appropriate conditions. Groups of six or more exhibit fascinating social foraging behaviour, moving in coordinated formation along the substrate in search of food.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A 60-litre minimum for a group of six. Fine sand substrate is ideal — corydoras' sensitive barbels are damaged by rough gravel. Driftwood, smooth stones, and broad-leaved plants create natural decor. Good filtration with aeration. Perform regular substrate siphoning to remove accumulated waste.

Water Parameters: Temperature 22–28°C; pH 6.0–8.0; GH 2–20 °dH; KH 1–15 °dH. Exceptionally adaptable — suitable for virtually any aquarium water supply. Avoid temperatures consistently above 28°C.

Feeding: Omnivore bottom feeder. Sinking corydoras wafers, pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Tubifex, and brine shrimp. Feed in the evening. Ensure food reaches the bottom in community tanks — other fish may eat it all before it sinks.

Tank Mates: Compatible with all peaceful community species. One of the safest fish for any community setup. Excellent companions for tetras, rasboras, livebearers, gouramis, danios, barbs, and peaceful cichlids.

Behaviour: Peaceful and social. Surface dashing to gulp air is normal intestinal breathing. Groups of 6+ are most active and exhibit natural social behaviour. Spawning involves a T-position where the female takes sperm into her mouth and deposits eggs on surfaces.

Health: Hardy and very long-lived (10–15 years possible). Main issues are barbel erosion from sharp substrate and bacterial infections from poor water quality. Provide fine sand and maintain clean water.
