Apteronotus leptorhynchus
Also known as: Brown Ghost Knife Fish, Long-nosed Knife Fish
Origin: South America
Apteronotus leptorhynchus is native to the Orinoco and Amazon basins of South America and is one of the most studied weakly electric fish in neuroscience research, known for its ability to shift its electric organ discharge frequency. Its smaller size and relatively peaceful nature make it suitable for a well-maintained large community tank.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; good filtration and oxygenation required. Tank: Minimum 200L, dimly lit, hiding tubes and driftwood, moderate current. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, small invertebrates. Behaviour: Nocturnal; active electric field user for navigation and social interaction. Compatibility: Peaceful with larger fish; do not mix with Black Ghost Knife Fish.
