Betta macrostoma
Origin: Brunei, Sarawak, Malaysia (captive-bred only — wild populations protected)
Betta macrostoma, the Brunei Beauty, is widely regarded as the most spectacular wild betta species. Males display vivid orange-red bodies, black heads, and striking black-edged dorsal fins. Endemic to Brunei and Sarawak where it is endangered and protected, making captive-bred specimens the only ethical source. Requires pristine, cool, and highly oxygenated water — recommended for experienced betta keepers only.
Requires cool (20–25°C), highly oxygenated, soft to moderately acidic water. Provide excellent filtration with good flow. Feed live and frozen meaty foods: earthworms, bloodworms, small crustaceans. Keep 1 male with 1–2 females in a dedicated setup — male will kill other males. Monitor females closely for stress. Tight-fitting lid essential.
