About

Brycinus longipinnis, commonly called the Longfin African Tetra, is one of the larger schooling tetras available from West Africa, ranging from Sierra Leone across to Nigeria. Adults develop notably elongated dorsal and anal fin rays, particularly in males, giving the species a distinctive and graceful profile in motion.

This species requires spacious aquariums with good filtration and moderate to strong water flow to replicate its riverine origins. Open swimming space is essential, and the species will become stressed and prone to jumping in overcrowded or cluttered setups. A tight-fitting lid is recommended. They school actively and look best in groups of ten or more.

Brycinus longipinnis is an eager feeder that accepts most standard aquarium foods including flake, pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates. Their active nature and large-community appeal make them a staple recommendation for West African biotope aquariums housing larger peaceful species.

Care Guide

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 200 L with strong flow, open swimming lanes, and a secure lid to prevent jumping. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and occasional live foods. Breeding: Egg scatterer; infrequently bred in captivity; soft acidic water and live foods condition spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with large African tetras, medium cichlids, and robust catfish.
