Buccochromis lepturus
Also known as: Slender-tail Hap, Lepturus Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Buccochromis lepturus is distinguished within its genus by a notably slender, elongated tail base and caudal peduncle, giving it a more streamlined silhouette than its congener B. nototaenia. Males in breeding condition are spectacular: the entire body becomes vivid royal blue while the pelvic fins develop a striking yellow-orange color that serves as a visual cue during courtship displays in open water.
This is a large, active open-water predator that covers considerable distances in Lake Malawi's pelagic zone. In the aquarium it demands a very large tank with strong filtration and high oxygen levels. Juveniles begin with a silver-brown patterning that gradually transforms as they mature, so patience is rewarded with a truly impressive adult fish.
Buccochromis lepturus is a maternal mouthbrooder producing relatively small broods. It is infrequently available in the hobby and commands a premium price among serious collectors. Best kept as the centerpiece of a large predatory Hap display.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; excellent oxygenation and filtration mandatory for a large active predator. Tank: 500 L minimum; long tank footprint preferred; minimal decor to maximize open swimming space. Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, whole krill, silversides; feed every 1–2 days; supplement with vitamins to maintain coloration. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3–4 weeks; separate brooding female to a dedicated nursery tank. Compatibility: Large Haps only (20 cm+); not suitable with mbuna or medium-sized Peacocks.
