Buccochromis nototaenia
Also known as: Dorsal-stripe Hap, Nototaenia Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Buccochromis nototaenia is distinguished from B. lepturus by a prominent horizontal stripe along the dorsal surface that persists even in the most colorful adult males. Breeding males develop a brilliant blue-green metallic sheen across the body while retaining the dorsal stripe as a darker contrast marking. This combination gives the species a unique appearance within the genus.
This is a large, rarely offered species in the European aquarium trade, making specimens particularly sought-after by Malawi specialists. Its natural habitat includes open water over sandy substrates where it actively pursues prey fish. The species has good longevity when well-maintained, potentially living 13 or more years.
Nototaenia is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females are dull grey-silver and cryptic. The species is best maintained as a single male with a spacious tank of non-prey tankmates. Water quality, temperature stability, and regular feeding with high-protein foods are the keys to long-term success with this impressive cichlid.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; large water changes weekly; high-performance filtration. Tank: 500 L minimum; open sandy floor; minimal rocks; prioritize swimming space over decor complexity. Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, krill, silversides; feed every 1–2 days in generous but not wasteful portions. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; isolate female post-spawning if aggression noted. Compatibility: Large Haps and Peacocks of 20 cm+; avoid any fish small enough to be eaten.
