Buccochromis rhoadesii
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa (open water and rocky shoreline zones)
Buccochromis rhoadesii is a large, scale-eating and piscivorous haplochromine from Lake Malawi, equipped with a broad mouth and powerful jaws for rasping scales from other cichlids. Adult males develop stunning yellow-green coloration with blue highlights and impressive body mass. Captive specimens readily accept meaty prepared foods and become personable, commanding display fish in suitably sized aquariums.
Requires a very large aquarium (500L+) with Malawi-style rock decor. Maintain hard, alkaline water with good filtration. Feed cichlid pellets, krill, prawns, and quality frozen meaty foods. Not suitable for community cichlid tanks — will attack and eat smaller cichlids. Best kept singly or as a mated pair. Monitor for aggression.
