Hyphessobrycon anisitsi
Also known as: Buenos Aires Tetra
Origin: South America (La Plata basin, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil)
Hyphessobrycon anisitsi, the Buenos Aires Tetra, is one of the most cold-tolerant tetras in the hobby, native to the La Plata basin of Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. Its silver body with red-tipped fins is attractive and undemanding to maintain. It is an energetic, somewhat boisterous fish known to consume soft-leaved plants — sturdier plant species like java fern and anubias are recommended.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, tolerates a wide range of hardness; unheated tanks suitable. Tank: 100 L minimum; robust plants only (java fern, anubias); open swimming areas essential. Feeding: Accepts virtually all foods — flake, pellets, frozen and live foods, plus plant matter. Behaviour: Active and boisterous schooling fish; keep 8+; may nip fins of slow-moving fish. Compatibility: Best with similarly robust, active fish such as barbs, danios, and larger tetras.
