Steatocranus casuarius
Also known as: Buffalo-head Cichlid, Blockhead Cichlid
Origin: Central Africa (Congo River rapids)
Steatocranus casuarius is a remarkable cichlid adapted to life in the fast-flowing rapids of the Congo River, where it hops along the substrate using its reduced swim bladder. Males develop a pronounced forehead hump. It is a cave-spawning species that forms strong pair bonds and is relatively peaceful outside of breeding.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, medium hardness; strong current beneficial. Tank: Minimum 120L; provide caves, flat rocks, and robust décor to anchor against flow. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and algae-based foods; grazes on biofilm. Behaviour: Bottom-hopping locomotion; cave-spawning pairs defend territory but are non-aggressive outside season. Compatibility: Compatible with Congo tetras, Synodontis catfish, and upper-level community fish.
