Bujurquina vittata
Also known as: Banded Bujurquina, Paraguay Mouthbrooder
Origin: South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay basin)
Bujurquina vittata is found in the Rio Paraguay and Rio Parana basins of Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. Unlike most South American cichlids, Bujurquina species are facultative mouthbrooders — the parents will initially spawn on a substrate but may collect the eggs or fry in their mouths if threatened. Males display a banded golden-brown body and the species is relatively tolerant of cooler temperatures.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 6.5-7.5, GH 5-15, KH 2-8; tolerates cooler temperatures than most cichlids. Tank: 100L minimum; open sandy areas and rocky caves for spawning. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts pellets, flake, and frozen foods readily. Behaviour: Mouthbrooding parental behaviour unique in the aquarium; pairs bond closely. Compatibility: Peaceful toward non-cichlids; can be kept with larger tetras and catfish.
