Brachygobius doriae
Also known as: Bumblebee Goby, Banded Goby, Doria's Bumblebee Goby
Origin: Southeast Asia (Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, Malaysia — brackish coastal habitats)
Brachygobius doriae, the Bumblebee Goby, is a small and charismatic brackish water goby from the coastal rivers, estuaries, and mangrove regions of Southeast Asia, including Borneo, Sumatra, Thailand, and Malaysia. Its vivid banding pattern of alternating black and yellow stripes — strikingly reminiscent of a bumblebee — makes it one of the most immediately recognisable small fish in the hobby.
This species reaches only 3–4 cm, making it suitable for nano aquariums. However, its water chemistry requirements set it apart from most nano fish: the Bumblebee Goby thrives in brackish water (light salinity) and often does poorly long-term in pure freshwater. Maintaining a salinity of around 1–3 grams of marine salt per litre (specific gravity approximately 1.001–1.003) significantly improves health and lifespan.
Bumblebee Gobies are bottom-dwellers that rest on hard surfaces rather than swimming constantly. They perch on rocks, wood, and substrate, darting after small live prey with remarkable speed. They are micro-predators that require live or frozen small invertebrate foods — frozen bloodworm and Daphnia are accepted, but live Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro worms are preferred.
Males are territorial toward each other, and a small group of one male and several females in a brackish nano aquarium is the ideal setup. They are fascinating to observe — stalking prey, perching on rocks, and interacting with their environment in a manner unlike typical schooling fish.
Tank Setup: A 30–40 litre brackish nano aquarium. Sandy substrate with smooth flat rocks, PVC caves, and driftwood for territory and perching. Add aquarium salt to achieve slight brackish conditions (1–3 g/L marine salt mix). Gentle filtration with minimal current. Densely structure the tank to create separate territories.
Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 7.5–8.5; GH 10–20 °dH; KH 5–12 °dH. Requires brackish conditions — add 1–3 g/litre of marine salt. Pure freshwater is tolerated short-term but leads to health decline long-term.
Feeding: Carnivore. Feed live and frozen small invertebrates only: baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, micro worms, small bloodworm, small Tubifex. Does not accept dry foods reliably. Feed twice daily in small portions, target-feeding each fish if needed.
Tank Mates: Best as a species-only setup in a brackish nano tank. Can be kept with other small brackish species: Archer Fish (juveniles), Mollies (which tolerate brackish), and micro mudskippers. Avoid any fish large enough to eat them.
Behaviour: Territorial, bottom-perching micro-predators. Males establish small territories around rocks and caves. Short explosive bursts of speed to capture prey. Fascinating to observe individual fish behaviour. Not a schooling species.
Health: Sensitive to pure freshwater long-term. Most health issues stem from inadequate salinity or live food deprivation. Provide brackish conditions and live/frozen food for excellent long-term health.
