Chaetodon burgessi
Origin: Western Pacific, Philippines to Samoa
Burgess' Butterflyfish is a deep-water species from the western Pacific typically found at 30–80 m among steep rocky and coral slopes. Its distinctive black-and-white banded pattern with yellow accents makes it highly sought after by collectors. Proper acclimation from its deep-water habitat is essential for long-term survival in captivity.
Require cooler water (22–26 °C) than typical shallow-water reef fish. Feed a varied diet: mysis, mussels, clam, coral polyp-based paste. Initial feeding can be challenging due to deep-water origin. Provide shaded rocky caves to reduce stress. Quarantine thoroughly before introduction. Expert-level species requiring dedicated attention during acclimatisation.
