Astatotilapia burtoni
Also known as: Burton's Mouthbrooder, Burtoni Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika region, Africa
Burton's Mouthbrooder is one of the best-studied cichlid species due to its extensively researched social behaviour, with dominant males rapidly shifting to bright colouration and subordinate males adopting a dull cryptic pattern to avoid aggression. It is a hardy, adaptable species that tolerates a wide range of water conditions and breeds readily in the aquarium.
Water: 23-27°C, pH 7.5-9.0, moderately hard alkaline water; tolerates a wide range of conditions. Tank: Minimum 120L; some rockwork and open areas; sheltered spots for females. Feeding: Omnivore — quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, frozen mysis, and live foods; easy to feed. Behaviour: Dominant males are brightly coloured and territorial; social hierarchy shifts dynamically. Compatibility: Small to medium rift lake community; suitable with Victorian or Tanganyikan species of similar size.
