Ancistrus dolichopterus
Origin: Brazil (middle Amazon River basin)
Ancistrus dolichopterus is the type species of the genus and one of the most commonly kept plecos, known for the impressive branched bristles that develop on the snout and cheeks of adult males. Originating from the middle Amazon, it is an outstanding algae grazer that also benefits from supplemental vegetable feeding and sinking wafers. Peaceful and adaptable — ideal for most community aquariums with driftwood.
Provide driftwood for rasping and hiding cover. Feed algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and occasional meaty supplements. Requires well-oxygenated water with good filtration. Keep one male per tank — males are territorial with each other. Nocturnal — provide caves. Breeds readily in captivity.
