Beaufortia kweichowensis
Also known as: Butterfly Hillstream Loach, Chinese Hillstream Loach
Origin: China
Beaufortia kweichowensis is arguably the most recognisable hillstream loach in the hobby, with its dramatically enlarged pectoral and pelvic fins giving it a wing-like silhouette. Its intricate marbled pattern of brown, cream and grey provides perfect camouflage against riverbeds. Requiring cool, highly oxygenated water and strong current, it is best suited to dedicated hillstream biotopes with specialist equipment.
Water: 18-24°C, pH 7.0-8.0, well-oxygenated with very strong flow. Tank: Minimum 60 L, large smooth boulders, chiller optional in warm climates. Feeding: Biofilm and algae primary; supplement sinking wafers and spirulina tabs. Behaviour: Diurnal; clings to and glides across rock surfaces; males display to rivals. Compatibility: Peaceful; best kept with small hillstream-adapted companions.
