Cyprinus rubrofuscus hybrid
Also known as: Butterfly Koi, Longfin Koi, Dragon Koi
Origin: USA/Japan
Butterfly Koi (also called Longfin Koi or Dragon Koi) are a hybrid between traditional nishikigoi and Indonesian longfin river carp, resulting in dramatically elongated, flowing fins. They are available in all standard koi color patterns and are extremely hardy due to hybrid vigor. Their flowing fins are especially striking when the fish moves at speed.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, very tolerant fish — excellent for beginners. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; the long fins are vulnerable to fin-nipping so monitor tank mates. Feeding: standard koi pellets; the hybrid vigor makes them excellent eaters. Behaviour: active, graceful, and interactive; some of the most personable koi available. Compatibility: other koi; monitor that short-finned koi don't nip the longer fins.
