Origin: South America
Cichla ocellaris is the most recognisable peacock bass, characterised by its row of lateral blotches and the striking ocellus on the caudal peduncle that gives it its common name. A powerful and active fish that requires massive filtration and an enormous aquarium to thrive.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 800L, powerful filtration, open water with minimal decoration. Feeding: Large fish, prawns, earthworms, and large carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Aggressive predator that will eat any fish that fits in its mouth. Compatibility: Species-only or with very large, robust companions; not a community fish.
