Carassius auratus
Also known as: Calico Ryukin, Ryukin Goldfish, Fancy Goldfish
Origin: Japan
The Calico Ryukin combines the hump-backed body shape of the ryukin with the nacreous (pearlescent) scaling that produces the multi-color calico pattern. Every fish has a unique pattern, making each specimen one of a kind. It is hardier than many other fancy goldfish varieties and well-suited to beginners who want something colorful.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, regular water changes to maintain clarity and health. Tank: minimum 150 L, good filtration — goldfish are heavy waste producers. Feeding: varied diet of sinking pellets, plant matter, and occasional protein-rich treats. Behaviour: bold and active; will readily approach the glass at feeding time. Compatibility: good community fish with other fancy goldfish varieties.
