Callochromis macrops

Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Callochromis macrops is a sand-dwelling mouthbrooder from the sandy littoral zones of Lake Tanganyika, immediately identified by its disproportionately large eyes adapted for detecting prey in the substrate. Breeding males develop vivid blue, red, and orange colouration while constructing sandy crater nests. A maternal mouthbrooder best kept as a harem.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 150L+; fine sand floor; open spawning areas in the foreground. Feeding: Carnivore-leaning diet; sinking pellet, frozen Mysis or Artemia; sifts sand in nature. Behaviour: Dominant males are colourful and territorial; females mouthbrood; keep one male to 2-3 females. Compatibility: Xenotilapia species, Cyprichromis leptosoma, Cyathopharynx furcifer.
