Pao cambodgiensis
Also known as: Cambodian Puffer
Origin: Cambodia (Mekong and Tonle Sap)
Pao cambodgiensis is found throughout the Mekong River and Tonle Sap lake system of Cambodia. It displays mottled green-brown dorsal patterning that provides excellent camouflage on riverbeds. Growing to around 15 cm, it occupies mid-water and the substrate in river systems with moderate flow. Beak trimming by a veterinarian or skilled keeper may occasionally be required if hard food is insufficient.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; low nitrates and regular maintenance are essential. Tank: Minimum 150 L; sandy substrate, rocks, and driftwood with open mid-water swimming space. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, large bloodworm, and earthworm segments. Behaviour: Aggressive and highly territorial — individual housing strongly advised. Compatibility: Species-only solo aquarium; no exceptions for tankmates.
