Taeniacara candidi
Also known as: Candidi's Dwarf Cichlid, Slender Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Negro)
Taeniacara candidi is a monotypic genus of dwarf cichlid endemic to the extreme blackwaters of the Rio Negro in Brazil. Its slender, torpedo-like body bears a bold dark lateral stripe from snout to tail, with a vivid red upper lobe of the caudal fin in males. This highly specialised species demands near-pure, very acidic water and a densely decorated aquarium to feel secure enough to display its full beauty.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.0, GH 0-3, KH 0-1; absolute blackwater conditions required. Tank: 60L minimum; dense leaf litter, driftwood, peat filtration, and dim lighting essential. Feeding: Omnivore; live micro-foods only at first; very reluctant to accept prepared diets. Behaviour: Secretive; males display fin patterns to females; pair bonding loose. Compatibility: Species tank only; extremely sensitive to competition and water quality.
