Peckoltia vittata
Also known as: Candy Striped Pleco, L015 Pleco, Barred Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Candy Striped Pleco (L015) is a small, elegantly proportioned loricariid belonging to the Peckoltia or Baryancistrus group, endemic to the warm, fast-flowing rocky sections of the Rio Xingu. Its bold alternating black-and-white vertical stripes make it one of the most visually distinctive dwarf plecos available in the hobby.
L015 is predominantly carnivorous and requires a protein-rich diet in captivity. Offer sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, and the occasional mussel or prawn. Driftwood provides essential secondary nutrition and shelter. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are non-negotiable for this species' long-term health.
Because of its small adult size, the Candy Striped Pleco is well-suited to larger community tanks or dedicated Xingu biotope setups. It can be kept with similarly sized robust tetras, small cichlids, and other Xingu species. Males may squabble over caves, so provide one cave per individual.
Water: pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; high flow and oxygenation critical. Tank: 100 L minimum; rocky decor, driftwood caves, and powerhead for current. Feeding: Carnivore; sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, mussel; supplement with driftwood. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely achieved; requires very warm, high-flow conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with most fish; males territorial with each other — one cave per fish.
