Sandelia capensis
Also known as: Cape Kurper, Cape Anabas
Origin: South Africa
Sandelia capensis is a small-to-medium anabantoid endemic to rivers and streams of South Africa's Cape Peninsula and surrounding region, including the Cape Floristic Region, a global biodiversity hotspot. It requires cooler water temperatures unusual for anabantoids and is of high conservation importance. Captive breeding programmes help safeguard this vulnerable species.
Water: temp 15–22°C, pH 6.5–8.0, clean, well-oxygenated, moderate hardness. Tank: minimum 120L; rocky substrate, robust plants, and good filtration with moderate flow. Feeding: omnivore — pellets, live invertebrates, earthworms, and insect larvae. Behaviour: semi-aggressive and territorial, especially between males. Compatibility: coolwater species community; avoid warm-water tropical fish.
