Hemiloricaria caracasensis
Also known as: Caracas Hemiloricaria, Coastal Range Whiptail
Origin: South America (Venezuela — Coastal Range rivers)
Hemiloricaria caracasensis was described from the river systems of the Venezuelan Coastal Range near Caracas, where it inhabits fast to moderately flowing clearwater streams with rocky and sandy substrates. The Coastal Range rivers are characterised by seasonal variation in flow, high oxygen content, and relatively cool temperatures compared to lowland Amazonian rivers. This shapes the species' captive requirements.
In the aquarium, this species benefits from slightly stronger water movement than most Rineloricaria species, reflecting its preference for more dynamic water environments. Water temperatures at the lower end of the tropical range are advisable. A sand or fine gravel substrate with some smooth stones and driftwood provides an appropriate environment.
Hemiloricaria caracasensis is a modestly sized, peaceful species that will slot well into a Venezuelan Coastal Range biotope aquarium or a general South American community. Like other Hemiloricaria, its spawning behaviour presumably follows standard loricariid tube or crevice guarding patterns.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15); moderate to strong flow; good oxygenation. Tank: 80 L minimum; smooth rocks and driftwood; sand substrate; spray bar or powerhead. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched zucchini; biofilm grazing on rocks and wood. Breeding: Presumed crevice spawner; follows Hemiloricaria patterns. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for fast-water South American biotope tanks.
