About

Caridina dennerli, the Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp, is widely considered the most beautiful freshwater dwarf shrimp in the world. Native to the ancient lakes of Sulawesi (particularly Lake Matano, Lake Towuti, and Lake Poso) in Indonesia, this species displays a stunning deep red body with vivid white spots arranged in a distinctive pattern — each individual has a unique spot arrangement, making every shrimp unique.

The lakes of Sulawesi are among the oldest and most isolated freshwater bodies on Earth, dating back millions of years. Their chemistry is extraordinary — warm, very clear water with a unique mineral composition: hard but not high in carbonate hardness, with a specific mineral balance unlike any standard aquarium water. Replicating this chemistry precisely is the primary challenge of keeping Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp successfully.

Cardinal Shrimp require water with: elevated temperature (27–30°C), neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.5–8.5), specific mineral hardness (GH 4–6 °dH), and very specific conductivity (typically 220–280 µS/cm). They are extremely sensitive to poor water quality, temperature fluctuations, and inappropriate chemistry.

Due to their beauty and demanding care requirements, Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp command premium prices and are sought after by experienced shrimp keepers. They are entirely peaceful and consume microfilm and microscopic algae from hard surfaces.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A dedicated 30–40 litre species-only or Sulawesi-species aquarium. Smooth rocks and wood for grazing surfaces. Fine white sand or bare-bottom substrate. Very gentle sponge filtration. Heater set to 27–30°C. Cover the tank to prevent temperature drops and jumping.

Water Parameters: Temperature 27–30°C; pH 7.5–8.5; GH 4–6 °dH; KH 2–4 °dH; Conductivity 220–280 µS/cm. Use RO water remineralised with a Sulawesi-specific mineral salt (e.g., Salty Shrimp Sulawesi Mineral 7.5 or similar). Never use standard softened or tap water without appropriate conditioning. Stability is critical — avoid any sudden changes.

Feeding: Micro-grazer. Consumes biofilm, microalgae, and fine organic particles from surfaces. Supplement with specialised shrimp foods (Shrimp King Sulawesi, Dennerle Shrimp King Baby), and allow biofilm to colonise rocks. Avoid heavy feeding — overfeeding deteriorates water quality rapidly.

Tank Mates: Species-only tank strongly recommended. Can be kept with other Sulawesi shrimp species (Caridina spinata, Neocaridina-like Sulawesi species) that share the same water requirements. Never mix with standard freshwater or Neocaridina setups — incompatible water chemistry.

Behaviour: Active grazers on hard surfaces. Peaceful and completely non-aggressive. Females carry eggs for approximately 30 days. Very small larvae hatch directly as miniature versions of the adults — no larval stage requiring brackish water.

Health: Highly sensitive. Water chemistry must be precise and stable. Main causes of death are temperature fluctuations, incorrect mineral balance, and water quality spikes. Weekly partial water changes with RO/remineralised water are essential. Advanced species — not recommended for beginners.
