Paracheirodon axelrodi
Also known as: Cardinal Tetra
Origin: South America (Rio Negro, Orinoco basins, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia)

Paracheirodon axelrodi, the Cardinal Tetra, is one of the most exported ornamental fish in the world, originating from the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins. Unlike the Neon Tetra, its vivid red stripe extends the full length of the body rather than only the rear half, making it even more striking. It demands warmer and softer water than the Neon Tetra but rewards careful care with extraordinary colour and schooling behaviour.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft and acidic water essential for best colour and health. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted aquarium with dark substrate, tannins and gentle filtration. Feeding: Micro-pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms and quality flake. Behaviour: Peaceful tight-schooling species; keep 10+; forms breathtaking synchronised schools. Compatibility: Ideal with soft-water community fish — corydoras, pencilfish, small rasboras, apistogramma.
