Cardiopharynx schoutedeni
Also known as: Schouteden's Sand Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Cardiopharynx schoutedeni is one of the least commonly encountered Tanganyika cichlids in the aquarium hobby. A member of tribe Ectodini, it inhabits open sandy areas and is a dedicated benthic sand-sifter. Males develop elongated pelvic fins and display subtle blue-grey body tones with yellow-gold fin highlights.
Very little detailed aquarium breeding information exists for this species, reflecting its rarity in captivity. It is presumed to be a biparental or female mouthbrooder based on its tribal affinities. Groups of six or more are recommended to encourage natural social behaviour.
C. schoutedeni requires a dedicated sand-biotope setup and is strictly for advanced Tanganyika specialists. Its rarity makes it a true collector's cichlid.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 8–16, KH 6–14; pristine water quality essential for this sensitive species. Tank: 350 L minimum; deep fine sand substrate; minimal décor; gentle filtration. Feeding: Fine sinking pellets; live and frozen Artemia, Mysis, and Daphnia; regular live food for conditioning. Breeding: Presumed female or biparental mouthbrooder; limited captive breeding data; large group recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful; combine only with calm, non-aggressive Tanganyika sand and open-water species.
