Palythoa caribaeorum
Origin: Caribbean, Tropical Atlantic
Palythoa caribaeorum forms large, spreading mats of medium-sized polyps in shades of tan, brown, and olive, embedding sand and detritus into its thick fleshy tissue as is characteristic of the Palythoa genus. Native to Caribbean reef environments, it tolerates a wide range of light levels and moderate water quality variation. Its fast growth rate ensures quick colony establishment and abundant fragging potential.
Place in low to moderate flow areas on rock or sand. Tolerates low to moderate lighting, making it one of the most forgiving reef corals. Feed with reef nutrition or reef roids occasionally to encourage growth. Handle with care — Palythoa produces palytoxin, a potent natural defence compound; wear gloves and avoid exposure to mucus or aerosols.
