Caridina brevata
Also known as: Caridina brevata, Brevata Shrimp
Origin: Southeast Asia
Caridina brevata is a small, inconspicuously colored Caridina species native to freshwater streams of Southeast Asia. Its natural appearance — a semi-translucent to pale brown body with subtle mottling — may lack the drama of selectively bred fancy Caridina, but it appeals to species collectors and biotope enthusiasts for its authenticity. C. brevata is an active biofilm and algae grazer that contributes to tank cleanliness. More adaptable than fancy Caridina, it tolerates soft to moderately hard water across a reasonable pH range. A peaceful, undemanding species well-suited to planted tanks with leaf litter, mosses, and gentle sponge filtration.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, TDS 100–250 ppm, temperature 22–26°C; soft to moderately hard freshwater. Tank: 20–40 litres; planted with leaf litter and mosses; sponge filtration. Feeding: Biofilm, algae, blanched vegetables, shrimp pellets. Breeding: Females brood small clutches; moderately tolerant of minor parameter changes. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with small, non-predatory fish and invertebrates.
