Caridina gracilirostris
Also known as: Rili-type Gracilirostris, Red Nose Shrimp Rili, Pinocchio Shrimp Rili
Origin: Southeast Asia – coastal freshwater and brackish streams
Caridina gracilirostris is a naturally occurring shrimp found in coastal freshwater and slightly brackish streams across Southeast Asia. The Rili-type variant displays a two-toned pattern with a pigmented, colored head and tail region separated by a clear, transparent midsection — a naturally occurring expression rather than selective breeding. These shrimp are notably more salt-tolerant than most freshwater Caridina, thriving in soft freshwater but also tolerating trace brackish conditions. A gentle, curious species that does well in planted aquariums with leaf litter and gentle filtration. Their Rili pattern adds visual interest without the demanding care requirements of fancy Taiwan Bee varieties.
Water: pH 6.5–7.8, TDS 100–300 ppm, temperature 22–26°C; freshwater to very low-brackish acceptable; adaptable. Tank: 20–40 litres; planted with mosses and leaf litter; gentle sponge filtration. Feeding: Biofilm, algae, fine shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Freshwater breeding typically unsuccessful; larvae may require brackish conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with small fish and other invertebrates.
