Caridina thae
Also known as: Caridina thae, Thae Shrimp
Origin: Southeast Asia – Thailand and surrounding region
Caridina thae is a lesser-known species native to freshwater streams of Southeast Asia. Unlike the highly selectively bred fancy Caridina, this species retains its natural, understated appearance: a semi-translucent body with subtle mottled or reddish-brown coloration that varies with environment and diet. More adaptable than most fancy Caridina, C. thae tolerates moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and is a good choice for hobbyists building experience with the Caridina genus before attempting more sensitive varieties. An active biofilm grazer, it thrives in planted tanks with leaf litter, mosses, and a mature microbial community.
Water: pH 6.2–7.0, TDS 100–200 ppm, temperature 20–25°C; soft to moderately soft; active substrate beneficial but not mandatory. Tank: 20–40 litres; planted with mosses, leaf litter, and driftwood. Feeding: Biofilm, algae, blanched vegetables, and shrimp pellets. Breeding: Females brood small clutches; moderately sensitive to parameter changes during brooding. Compatibility: Good with small, peaceful fish and other non-predatory invertebrates.
