Carinotetraodon imitator
Also known as: North India Dwarf Puffer, Indian Imitator Puffer, Himalayan Foothills Puffer
Origin: Northern India (Himalayan foothill river tributaries)
Carinotetraodon imitator from northern India, collected in rivers draining the Himalayan foothills, shows slightly bolder male colouration with higher-contrast dorsal patterning than southern Indian populations and greater tolerance for the cooler seasonal temperatures experienced in upland North Indian rivers during winter months. The species closely resembles C. travancoricus but is found in the northern Ganges tributaries rather than the southern peninsular rivers. Care follows the standard dwarf Carinotetraodon protocol: a heavily planted aquarium, small snails as the dietary cornerstone, and manageable group housing with one male to multiple females. Its slightly broader temperature tolerance makes it one of the more adaptable Carinotetraodon species for temperate-zone fishkeepers.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard; pristine quality; 25% weekly water changes. Tank: 40 L minimum; dense fine-leaf planting, Java moss, floating cover; one male per tank. Feeding: Small snails primary; frozen cyclops, bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; varied diet essential. Breeding: Egg scatterer among fine plants; male guards territory; soft water and dense planting trigger spawning. Compatibility: One male per tank; females manageable together; avoid fin-nipping tankmates.
