Callichthys callichthys
Origin: South America (widespread — Trinidad to Argentina)
Callichthys callichthys is the type species of the family Callichthyidae, a heavily armored catfish native to a vast range across tropical South America from Trinidad to Argentina. A nocturnal, burrowing species that uses intestinal respiration to survive in oxygen-depleted waters. Males construct large bubble nests at the surface during the breeding season. Tough and adaptable, best kept with robust species that won't nip its fins.
Hardy and adaptable to a very wide range of conditions. Provide shelter areas such as caves, pipes, and leaf litter. Feed sinking meaty foods: frozen bloodworms, earthworms, sinking pellets. Allow occasional air-breathing from the surface — essential. Nocturnal — most active after lights out. Males will aggressively defend bubble nests during breeding.
