Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata
Also known as: Caudipunctata Loach, Spotted-tail Loach
Origin: India (Brahmaputra basin)
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata is a relatively little-known member of the genus, endemic to the Brahmaputra River system in northeastern India. It is a slender species reaching around 9 cm, patterned with rows of small dark spots on a pale to olive-brown body. Like its congeners, it is an active, shoaling fish that benefits greatly from being kept in groups.
This loach inhabits clear, gently flowing streams with sandy and silty substrates, often among leaf litter and submerged roots. In the aquarium it appreciates a well-planted setup with open swimming areas, fine substrate for digging, and abundant hiding spaces. Water quality should be kept excellent, as this species is sensitive to nitrate accumulation.
Feeding is straightforward — it readily accepts a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live foods. The Caudipunctata Loach makes a rewarding choice for the loach enthusiast seeking a lesser-known species with genuine personality.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–27°C, soft to moderately hard, clean with regular water changes. Tank: 80 L minimum; fine sandy substrate, leaf litter, driftwood, dense planting around edges. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live invertebrates. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with other small, peaceful community fish and other Yasuhikotakia species.
