Pocillopora damicornis
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea, Eastern Pacific
Pocillopora damicornis is one of the most widespread SPS corals in the world, forming compact, bushy colonies of smooth rounded branches in shades of cream, pink, and brown that closely resemble cauliflower. Considered one of the more accessible SPS corals, it tolerates moderate water quality and a range of light intensities that would challenge other small-polyped stony corals. It also serves as a host for commensal gobies and guard crabs, adding biodiversity interest.
Place in moderate to high flow with medium to high lighting. Maintain calcium 400–450 ppm, alkalinity 8–10 dKH, and magnesium 1250–1350 ppm. Temperature 24–27°C, salinity 1.023–1.025. More forgiving of water quality than most SPS corals, making it an excellent first stony coral. Frag by breaking branches.
