Apistogramma sp. 'Caura'
Also known as: Caura Apisto, Caura Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America
Apistogramma sp. Caura hails from the biodiverse Caura River system in Venezuela, a major tributary of the Orinoco. This undescribed species is characterised by a comparatively deep body profile and a spectacularly coloured caudal fin in dominant males. It thrives only in very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (GH 1-4); blackwater setup essential. Tank: 60L minimum, dark substrate, leaf litter, caves, minimal current. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen microfoods; cichlid micro-pellets accepted over time. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem (1M:2-3F) in larger tanks. Compatibility: blackwater species tank or with small Venezuelan/Orinoco tetras.
